Quadling Multiplex

The Quadling Multiplex is situated in the historic Maillardville area, a French pocket of Coquitlam. Many buildings in the area reference their French heritage, employing architectural elements, such as mansard roofs and dormers.

With exaggerated two-storey dormers, our design for Quadling Townhomes puts a contemporary spin on traditional Hausmann architecture. The dormers articulate the facade, breaking it up to be human-scaled, create unit identity and aid in wayfinding. These are all planning priorities that are crucial to preserve the vibrant fabric of Maillardville.

To address a wide range of demographic groups, two-storey townhomes are stacked on top of ground-oriented apartment units. The unit variety is expressed on the facade, creating visual interest and giving the building a clear base. The building is surrounded by outdoor amenity spaces, softening its relation to the street, and creating space for community gathering.

Overall, Quadling balances the architectural form and scale of Maillardville through the introduction of a simple facade element, while meeting the City's guidelines and client's density requirements.
